There may be a little bone here or there and maybe a couple feathers left behind, but you're going to keep eating it. Brothers Teague and Ian Alexy’s first two albums as Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank placed them firmly among the pioneers of the impressive roots music resurgence going on in Minnesota. The lion's share of Traveling Show was recorded in three marathon days at Rough Magic Studios in Brooklyn NY. Ian's old friend from his stint at Berklee College of Music Marco Benevento – who the All Music Guide calls "an outrageously talented musician" - electrifies three tracks putting his organ, wurlitzer and circuit bent toys in an exciting new Americana context. Pedal steel player Jon Graboff (Ryan Adams and The Cardinals) adds his luminous sound to two songs while members of fellow Minnesota roots music troubadours Trampled By Turtles add impeccable violin, mandolin and banjo.
Included with the physical version of Traveling Show is the 60 minute film Moments and Truths documenting the making of the record in New York City as well as sights, sounds and encounters from all over the country. Directed and edited by filmmaker/photographer Joshua Priestley, and partially shot by the band themselves, Moments And Truths is a uniquely stylized film that captures the Hobo Nephews transient life. It also captures the band at an exciting period as their musicianship, songwriting and musical vision rise to new heights.

Upon returning to his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin after living in Portland, Oregon for two years, Jon Stover [Echoes of Empire, Grandstand] knew he wanted to start a new rock group. With influences ranging from classic rock to more modern but timeless punk sounds, he crafted a small batch of songs and began rehearsing with his reunited friend and previous Joshua Circle band mate, drummer Andy Christoffersen [I Voted for Kodos] in the fall of 2010.
The two practiced for a few weeks, and then decided it was time to begin the hunt for potential band mates. Enter Brian Koderl. Stover and Koderl had known each other since high school, but had lived in different cities since then and had not played much music together before now. Jon and Andy presented Brian with their selection of songs, and Brian was hooked. The three began rehearsing where Andy lived, writing new material and sculpting their sound. It was not long until the trio sought another tone to add to their arsenal.
The three were aware of pianist/vocalist Luke Crary [A Gnarly Swell, Future Robotz], a performer capable of adding the sounds they were seeking. Jon personally had witnessed his harmonic skill during high school, in addition to being room mates at UW Eau Claire their freshman year of college. Luke was invited to join the sonic exploration, and he accepted this invitation with a quick hand and an even quicker ear for melody. It was during this time that the four moved rehearsals over to Rex’s Rock Ranch, an undisclosed East side studio run by the official IaD roadies/engineers/pyro-techs, Ross and Rex Koderl.
The group played with a two other bassists over the course of the year, but eventually came to realize they needed a permanent low end-ist to round out their audio onslaught. Jon reached out to the infamous Dusty Lustful [Bears Climb Mountains]; a seasoned musician from Winona, Minnesota. I am Dragon had played shows with his previous project Bears Climb Mountains. Dustin soon provided the thumping bass lines necessary to get the people moving.

Parr released his first recording, Criminals & Sinners, to mild local acclaim in 2001. (A special limited edition vinyl version of this album will be released in the late summer of 2011 to mark the anniversary). In any case, since that first recording,Charlie Parr has managed to release seven additional raw, lo-fi albums right up to the latest,When the Devil Goes Blind and perhaps his best-known, 1922. His newest batch of recordings will be entitled Barnswallow, set to be released in 2012.
He has achieved a remarkable amount of success for a folk-singer and songwriter of his untrained abilities. This is surely attributable to Charlie’s all-encompassing and encyclopaedic knowledge of the American folk, country and blues cannon, and much admired guitar playing, ranging across a self-taught mix of slide, finger-picking and quasi-frailing technique and played on National resonator guitar, 12-string and banjo.
He’s travelled throughout the US, Australia, the UK and Europe playing everywhere from fancy theatres to punk rock dives where the toilet seats are always missing. Folks seem to like him just fine, in spite of his less than heroic efforts at self-promotion, etiquette or hygiene.

Like notable musicians before him, singer-songwriter Cory Chisel forged his first connection to the power of song through the music he heard – and made – in church. His father was a Baptist minister, his mother played piano during services, and an upbringing surrounded by sermons and spirituals instilled in Cory the passion and portent of language and melody, and a fluency in the gospel’s rich vernacular of loss and redemption.
Based in Appleton, WI with his band, The Wandering Sons, Chisel’s upcoming six song EP, “Cabin Ghosts” reflects the inspiration of his upbringing with a spare Americana-saturated sound that is its own exquisite blend of folk-country and Delta blues. With his voice full of soul and longing, Chisel’s expressive vocals and the Sons’ loosely orchestrated, impeccable playing emerge fully formed yet somehow familiar and as confident in its sonics as in its lyrical echoes of existential grace and mystery.

Tapes ‘n Tapes is a rock band from Minneapolis, MN, made up of Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion. Grier said he formed the band in 2003, to “have fun with my friends. I always wanted to see if I could play music with others and for others.” Grier and his buddies amassed “tapes ‘n tapes” of noodling, experimental jams and declared themselves officially a band.
In the winter of 2004, the band now known as Tapes ‘n Tapes bought some recording equipment and headed out to a rustic cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. They recorded their self-titled, now long out of print, seven song EP in three days. Songs like “Beach Girls” and “50’s Parking” from the EP are still in their live set today.
Next up for the band was recording their critically acclaimed follow up, The Loon. Appelwick recorded, mixed and produced the eleven song record with the band in one week at a friend’s home studio. The Loon came out in November of 2005 on ibid records, and no one was ready for what came next. People started to notice the foursome’s jangly, melodic brand of rock and the band started touring – gaining more and more attention from music critics and fans all over the world. Even the Thin White Duke took notice. “’Insistor’ is the first single, and it's cracking. It was a slow grower, but once that chorus digs in there's really no escape,” said Mr. David Bowie. The prestigious XL Recordings re-released The Loon in July of 2006, the same month Tapes ‘n Tapes made their national television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.
The band then toured around the world for the next few years- playing shows with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Cold War Kids, The Black Keys, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Wrens. In 2006 they were honored to play Reading/Leeds, and 2007 saw them rock out at Lollapalooza and Coachella.
When starting to work out songs for their follow up, Walk It Off, the band was asked who their dream producer was. The obvious answer to them was Mr. Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT). With twelve songs in hand, the band made the jaunt to upstate New York to live and work with Fridmann for two amazing weeks- one week in September 2007 to record and one week in October 2007 to mix. However, years of touring, the political climate, and distance from friends and family had changed the band, and given them a different point of view- one that seemed to pervade their sound. Spin praised the record saying, “the tunes are tighter and performances far more dynamic and aggressive…..they can now pull off jittery punk and understated, graceful melancholy.” XL released Walk It Off in April of 2008, on the same day the band made their debut on Conan O’Brien.
After touring and supporting Walk It Off for the following year, it was time for a little R & R- rest and relaxation. They purposefully took their time and tried to get back to a place where the band was fun, and not work. They also decided to go back to their roots and do everything on their own, with no label involvement. They cut ties with XL, and re-launched ibid records, their own label which initially released The Loon. The brothers tapes had saved their pennies over the years and set out to make the record they’ve always wanted to make – Outside. They wanted to record at home and self-produce, which they did over two weeks at The Terrarium in Minneapolis, MN in March of 2010. The next step was getting the talented Mr. Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) to lend his ears to the mix. Grier spent two more weeks in Bridgeport, CT while Katis mixed the record to perfection. Tapes ‘n Tapes finally have the record they’ve always wanted- twelve songs that are playful and melodic, while also capturing the essence and energy of their live show. Grier said, “We had a great time making Outside and we wanted our enjoyment of the process to be audible in the recording, and I think we succeeded.” One thing is for sure, Tapes ‘n Tapes feel like they are making music for the right reasons – fun and pure love for music. Raised in a Buddhist household, immersing himself in Black history, world culture, and community work, Toki Wright’s awareness of the diverse world we live in is translated through his content driven music. He has taken paths that run the gamut from a non-profit youth organization in North Minneapolis to work with war-affected children in Northern Uganda. As an artist, Wright’s travels have taken him throughout the United States and Canada as support and hypeman for Brother Ali. Tapes ‘n Tapes is a rock band from Minneapolis, MN, made up of Josh Grier on guitar and lead vocals, Matt Kretzmann on keys and horns, Erik Appelwick on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jeremy Hanson on percussion. Grier said he formed the band in 2003, to “have fun with my friends. I always wanted to see if I could play music with others and for others.” Grier and his buddies amassed “tapes ‘n tapes” of noodling, experimental jams and declared themselves officially a band.
In the winter of 2004, the band now known as Tapes ‘n Tapes bought some recording equipment and headed out to a rustic cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. They recorded their self-titled, now long out of print, seven song EP in three days. Songs like “Beach Girls” and “50’s Parking” from the EP are still in their live set today.
Next up for the band was recording their critically acclaimed follow up, The Loon. Appelwick recorded, mixed and produced the eleven song record with the band in one week at a friend’s home studio. The Loon came out in November of 2005 on ibid records, and no one was ready for what came next. People started to notice the foursome’s jangly, melodic brand of rock and the band started touring – gaining more and more attention from music critics and fans all over the world. Even the Thin White Duke took notice. “’Insistor’ is the first single, and it's cracking. It was a slow grower, but once that chorus digs in there's really no escape,” said Mr. David Bowie. The prestigious XL Recordings re-released The Loon in July of 2006, the same month Tapes ‘n Tapes made their national television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.
The band then toured around the world for the next few years- playing shows with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, Cold War Kids, The Black Keys, Echo & the Bunnymen, and The Wrens. In 2006 they were honored to play Reading/Leeds, and 2007 saw them rock out at Lollapalooza and Coachella.
When starting to work out songs for their follow up, Walk It Off, the band was asked who their dream producer was. The obvious answer to them was Mr. Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT). With twelve songs in hand, the band made the jaunt to upstate New York to live and work with Fridmann for two amazing weeks- one week in September 2007 to record and one week in October 2007 to mix. However, years of touring, the political climate, and distance from friends and family had changed the band, and given them a different point of view- one that seemed to pervade their sound. Spin praised the record saying, “the tunes are tighter and performances far more dynamic and aggressive…..they can now pull off jittery punk and understated, graceful melancholy.” XL released Walk It Off in April of 2008, on the same day the band made their debut on Conan O’Brien.
After touring and supporting Walk It Off for the following year, it was time for a little R & R- rest and relaxation. They purposefully took their time and tried to get back to a place where the band was fun, and not work. They also decided to go back to their roots and do everything on their own, with no label involvement. They cut ties with XL, and re-launched ibid records, their own label which initially released The Loon. The brothers tapes had saved their pennies over the years and set out to make the record they’ve always wanted to make – Outside. They wanted to record at home and self-produce, which they did over two weeks at The Terrarium in Minneapolis, MN in March of 2010. The next step was getting the talented Mr. Peter Katis (Interpol, The National) to lend his ears to the mix. Grier spent two more weeks in Bridgeport, CT while Katis mixed the record to perfection. Tapes ‘n Tapes finally have the record they’ve always wanted- twelve songs that are playful and melodic, while also capturing the essence and energy of their live show. Grier said, “We had a great time making Outside and we wanted our enjoyment of the process to be audible in the recording, and I think we succeeded.” One thing is for sure, Tapes ‘n Tapes feel like they are making music for the right reasons – fun and pure love for music. And as Grier always says, “Everything else is gravy.” Outside will be released on January 11, 2011.

To hear the words come from John Bernadot's mouth, it's almost hard to believe.
"I'm almost kind of glad it happened," John said.
"It" was a stroke the popular Winona area singer, musician and humorist suffered while doing his weekly radio broadcast. The stroke nearly killed him, but John says it helped him realize and appreciate all the people his life and music have touched.
"I've had an amazing life," said John. "I still have all of that, but now I've turned into a guy who died and came back. The things the stroke affected are now coming back day by day."

Chris Koza is a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter who has been recording and releasing albums since 2004, when he self- released the critically acclaimed “Exit Pesce”, a collection of 9 songs self-recorded and produced in a summer sublet apartment.
With both his full band, and also as a duo with longtime guitar player Peter Sieve, Koza has toured the U.S. a handful of times, winding his way through the Dakotas, Montana, and Washington state to his hometown of Portland, OR, through the state of California, across Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Nebraska, Missouri, and back to Minnesota through the Iowan Interstate.
In the Twin Cities, Koza performs as both a solo artist, as part of ensemble shows, and primarily with his band Rogue Valley . His song-writing carries a strong emphasis on the lyrical and poetic elements, with stylings and textures rooted in folk and americana traditions. It is impossible to ignore his influences through a classic and contemporary pop music lineage including the likes of The Zombies, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, Greg Brown, Elliot Smith, Ryan Adams, Brendon Benson, and Fleet Foxes, to name a few.

Pat Dougherty began writing songs in a borrowed storage closet. Tinkering with only a friend's drum set and an old organ, he would periodically emerge to share the works in progress to handful of close friends that would later become Fairfax, AK.

Midwest Music Fest events at the Polish Museum (04/20/2012)
As part of the Midwest Music Fest we are offering two events at the Polish Museum. We are proud to present the Heritage Concert. In the museum you will be treated to music taken from the archives of the museum. Dr. Michael Dubiaga searched through pieces of music that have not been heard in many years. Michael will be playing the violin along with Nancy Edstrom on the piano. I have been treated already as they have practiced in the museum as I am typing this article and it is simply beautiful. Please join us for a blend of traditional Polish music that dates back to the early 1900’s. These pieces range from traditional patriotic, dance and folk pieces written by early American Polish immigrants. They will play from 7-8pm and there will be a reception to follow
Also, if you want to cut a rug we have the Overall Kampa’s playing your polka favorites. They are our good friends from the Arcadia/Independence area. They will be playing in the Polish Museum Annex from 6-9pm. Popcorn and soda’s to be served. This band is known for getting you up and off the chair to dance.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, singer-songwriter (and original member of the alt-bluegrass band The Pistol Whippin’ Party Penguins) Jake Manders, started writing songs and playing guitar when we was 14. To remember them all he recorded them on a handheld tape cassette player before finally transferring them to his laptop. Today Jake has a collection of more than 200 original songs... In 2009 he started recording for his first full-length album at Slow Studios with Ben Kyle of the alt-country band Romantica. Over the two years it took to complete the album Jake invited many of his friends from the music scene to add their talent to the ongoing project. Some of the songs on the album were written during the two years in which they were recorded while others were written 5, 10 or even 15 years prior.

Nicholas loves to keep things fresh, and incorporates dozens of local MN musicians in his shows. The album was named "Best Local Compilation CD" by the City Pages and also reigned as top seller for multiple weeks at Electric Fetus. Jaybone Bell fell out of the sky in 1989, and to the surprise of his parents and relatives he proved himself to be incredibly normal. Not a day past by that he did not brush his teeth or comb his hair. He wore his shirt tucked in nice to his plastic pants and he even attended Sunday school regularly. This all of course changed on a sunny day sometime around the passing of the new millennium when the mysterious methods of the universe caught up to him in the form of a guitar. Jaybone soon ruined his voice singing long into the night and broke off the tips of his fingers continuously till the age of 18 when they finally figured out how to heal themselves. Bell’s songs sing of hope and despair and iron and salt, and all the other ingredients that life seems to throw his way.

The WSU jazz ensemble is an elite group of outstanding musicians selected by audition each fall semester. This 18-piece group performs both traditional and contemporary jazz in all styles from concert jazz to dance music.
The jazz ensemble is one of the most active groups on campus performing several times each year. Many of the concerts feature guest artists from the U.S. and abroad who perform with and clinic the band providing additional instruction opportunities for students.
The WSU jazz ensemble makes frequent appearances at jazz festivals throughout the U.S. and also tours throughout the tri-state region performing at area schools.

He has spun at clubs and raves throughout Duluth and the Twin Cities. Eventually joining with the powerhouse hip hop groups Option Two and Rapfam as well as spinning for several other MCs. Hill County Destroyer is a driving three piece based out of Winona, Minnesota that draws influence from the limestone bluffs that encase the town to the east, west and south and the great muddy river that boarders to the north. The band consists of J. Rehn Datta on guitar and lead vocals, Dietz Parker on bass and vocals and C. Wardwell on drums. Raw and rowdy rhythm oriented and slide accented guitar riffs, supported by the massive rhythm machine of Parker and Wardwell, Hill County Destroyer has a sound all its own. Juke joint blues to make you remember you have a soul, alt-country to tear it apart, hard biting rock and roll to lose it, and old timey gospel to salve it. Patti Darbo is a local singer/songwriter with a beautiful rich alto voice who writes heartfelt songs about the human experience. For 31-year-old Minnesota-native Ben Weaver, the follow-up to his lauded 2008 album, The Ax in the Oak, came from a somewhat unexpected series of life choices and experiences. In the spring of 2009 Weaver decided to take some time away from touring to pursue his interest in food and cooking. It was while working as a prep and garde manger cook at a farm-to-table restaurant in Minneapolis, that the songs on his latest album, Mirepoix and Smoke, started to take shape:
"Eventually the good songs started to come. Ones that felt real, had their own legs. They came like all good things do. When I ceased looking. Connected to my surroundings, my past, my life, for what it all was, without romanticizing what I thought it should or could be. I found a new perspective. Let the birds in my head fly free."
While The Ax in the Oak was more complex in its sound—the result of a collaboration between Weaver and Brian Deck (Califone, Iron and Wine)—Mirepoix and Smoke is a decidedly more bucolic affair; its songs are barely accompanied by more than Weaver’s guitar or banjo and his voice, allowing for a more sensory experience of Weaver’s signature lyrical poetics. You just don’t hear Mirepoix and Smoke—you smell it, taste it, feel it and see it.

Nicholas loves to keep things fresh, and incorporates dozens of local MN musicians in his shows. For instance, his critically acclaimed album "Together We're Stronger" that featured local Minnesota musicians from over 40 local bands. That album allowed all of these musicians to be a part of an album that was played at hundreds of radio stations across the country. Nicholas' list of players and band mates is ever growing, changing, and yet, there's always room for everyone somehow. There is a freedom in the playing that makes musicians love to play with him. He gives them a chance to add there own unique spin on his songs, and to create in the moment. It makes the music that much more wonderful.
Nicholas’ was a big part of the hugely successful charity album, The Minnesota Beatle Project. His rendition of The Beatles classic “Across the Universe” was in heavy rotation for months on 89.3, "The Current." The album was named "Best Local Compilation CD" by the City Pages and also reigned as top seller for multiple weeks at Electric Fetus. To date, this project raised over $50,000 to help keep music programs alive in Minnesota Public Schools. NIcholas wants to help wherever he can. The White Iron Band is a high-energy renegade American roots band specializing in foot-stompin, forget-what-troubles-ya music. Originally formed in Ely, MN, the heart of Minnesota’s northern Iron Range, by frontman Matt Pudas, guitarist Sammy Weyandt and keyboardist Eddie Juntunen, the White Iron Band embodies the triumphs and struggles of the everyday man. Their songs carry a tinge of the old cowboy legends canonized by the Highwaymen, with stories ranging from tales of love, pain, jail, work and whiskey. Now based in Minneapolis, the group has established a passionate and equally as rowdy fan-base throughout the Midwest and has traveled further to spread their unique mix of blues, country and Americana roots music.
After more than 10 years together the band has played over a thousand shows and released four full-length, original albums. After the success of their latest independent release Devil’s Sweet Revenge (2008), the group has gone back to the studio with renewed vigor to record a fifth album. Production is already underway so expect the album to be released sometime in 2010. In 1951, this current incarnation of Joe Price arrived in Waterloo, Iowa. Unlike most kids of his generation, Price was never seduced by pop or rock ‘n’ roll music. Although his love for music was virtually immediate, it was country blues that grabbed him early; a bond that has never been broken.
It was a chance encounter with the late, great Chicago bluesman Earl Hooker, who the young Price caught in performance at a home town record store, that really sealed the deal. “He was unbelievable, that guy—he really flipped me out,” Price remembers. “He told me to cut the end of a bicycle handlebar off to make a good slide.”
Joe’s music became a crazy elastic form of old-school guitar blues that sounds like nothing else. The rhythms bounce and hop like a super-ball on caffeine, and at times, it sounds like two or three guitars at once, but it’s all just Joe slapping and hammering those strings and layering vibrations and tones over each other into this heady cocktail of joyous musical energy. The crazy tunings, the breakneck rhythms and the growling, dancing bass notes work together to weave a unique and utterly un-copyable sound and tone.
In 1971 Joe had made the move to Iowa City. It was a fertile time and place for the blues. Located on I-80, Iowa City was a natural stop for national touring artists connecting Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. Beginning with the Rocket 88’s (through 1974) and continuing with the legendary Mother Blues (an edgy, three-headed beast featuring Patrick Hazell, Bo Ramsey and Price) from ‘75 till ’81, Joe played virtually non-stop. During that stretch, the band worked almost nightly, crisscrossing Midwestern bars and serving as the openers of choice at high-profile shows by Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, Clifton Chenier, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee, James Cotton and more.
In 1982 Joe escaped to Lansing in northeast Iowa. The picturesque burg happens to be near Waukon, the hometown of a pretty young blues belter, Vicki Ewing, who had captured his attention during a 1981 solo gig.
Vicki might be Iowa's answer to early Maria Muldaur (when she was Maria d'Amato) with strong currents of the likes of Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette, the Mississippi River vocal twang, but rooted more solidly in the blues than they. With a more disciplined and structural guitar style providing a comping background spine to Joe's slide and lead work, the two styles dovetailed into a coherent convincing whole.
Joe and Vicki married in 1987, after having toured together for five years. Over their 27 years together they have opened for such notables as Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Pine Top Perkins, Homesick James, Honeyboy Edwards, Louisiana Red, Al Green, Greg Brown and Iris DeMent. Joe is a member of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame, The Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and was a finalist in the International Blues Challenge in 2008. They won the Independent Music Award for Best Blues CD 2010. The couple was awarded an official showcase at the Far West Folk Alliance Music Conference 2011.
The couple worked with Iowa’s Trailer Records from 1996 to 2007. Sadly, in 2007 Trailer Records shut its’ doors. Taking the initiative the couple released two CD’s on their home-grown label Blues Acres Productions; in October of 2008 A Brand New Place which features 10 new tunes penned by Vicki and in March of 2009 Joe’s collection of original songs Rain or Shine. Both releases made the top 100 CD’s of 2009 in Real Blues Magazine. A Brand New Place was nominated for Best independent release at the International Blues Challenge in 2008, Rain or Shine was nominated for 2009. Rain or Shine won an Independent Music Award for Best Blues CD 2010 and also won the IMA Vox Pop People’s Choice Award 2010. “Rain or Shine” has received rave reviews in major publications including Vintage Guitar Magazine, DownBeat Magazine, The American Music Guide, Blues Revue and the Chicago Sun Times.
Joe and Vicki appear regularly at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago and BB’s in St. Louis. From coast to coast, and from concerts, to clubs, to outdoor festivals, the Price's singular vision and dazzling, irresistible live performances continue to etch a steady, upward arc.

I play acoustic guitar, piano, and sing in a solo act. My original music reflects the the likes of my main influences, including John Mayer, Dave Matthews, and Jason Mraz, as well as creating my own style of writing. I sing mostly pop, rock, and alternative inspired songs.
I've won first place performing at the Winona Middle School talent show, been featured with the Winona Senior High School marching band in which I sang "Baby" by Justin Bieber for the half time show, and I frequently sing the national anthem for both Winona Senior High School and Winona State sporting events.

The WSU Choirs will perform under the direction of Harry Mechell as part of Gala Weekend.
Dr. Harry Mechell, the Director of Choral Activities at Winona State University, holds a Doctorate in Choral Conducting from the University of Illinois, where he studied with Harold A. Decker. His Masters and Bachelors Degrees were earned at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he studied with Robert Page. Mechell has also studied under other leading conductors and teachers, including Helmuth Rilling, Elaine Brown, Otto Werner Mueller and Paul Vermel.
His responsibilities at Winona State University, besides conducting the Concert Choir, Women's Chorus and the Madrigal Singers, include teaching voice, conducting and choral methods. From 1991-2000, he served as Chairman of the Music Department. Under his leadership, WSU's Renaissance Madrigal Banquets have become yearly events performed to capacity audiences and the annual "Messiah Sing-In" has become a major community event drawing crowds of over 1000.
Dr. Mechell has published several choral arrangements with Lawson-Gould Music Publishers. Much in demand as a clinician and adjudicator, he has served as guest conductor Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas and Pennsylvania. His choirs have toured Western Europe and have performed at MENC Conventions. During the summer of 2001, the WSU Concert Choir toured and concertized in Italy and Austria for two weeks, culminating in a performance of the Mozart Requiem in Innsbruck, Austria.
Dr. Mechell has been an advocate of twentieth century choral music throughout his career. Two seasons ago, he conducted the WSU Concert Choir in a mid-American premiere of the Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt's newest choral work, Magnificat for the New Millennium, with the composer in attendance Last season, the Winona Oratorio Chorus performed Arthur Honegger's King David and Carl Orff's Carmina Burana.
Dr. Mechell has devoted over thirty years to directing church choirs, specializing in the performance of sacred works with chorus and orchestra. He directs the Senior Choir at Central Lutheran Church in Winona. During his career, he has directed and conducted over thirty musicals at the high school, college, community theater and professional levels.
In addition, Dr. Mechell directs the Winona Oratorio Chorus, an auditioned community choir specializing in performing major choral-orchestral works. In recent years, the ensemble has performed major works by Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Gounod, Honegger, Rodrigo and Rutter.

Greg Brown's mother played electric guitar, his grandfather played banjo, and his father was a Holy Roller preacher in the Hacklebarney section of Iowa, where the Gospel and music are a way of life. Brown's first professional singing job came at age 18 in New York City, running hootenannies (folksinger get-togethers) at the legendary Gerdes Folk City. After a year, Brown moved west to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where he was a ghostwriter for Buck Ram, founder of the Platters. Tired of the fast-paced life, Brown traveled with a band for a few years, and even quit playing for a while before he moved back to Iowa and began writing songs and playing in midwestern clubs and coffeehouses.
Brown's songwriting has been lauded by many, and his songs have been performed by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Michael Johnson, Shawn Colvin, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has also recorded more than a dozen albums, including his 1986 release, Songs of Innocence and of Experience, when he put aside his own songwriting to set poems of William Blake to music. One Big Town, recorded in 1989, earned Brown three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, chart-topping status in AAA and The Gavin Report's Americana rankings and Brown's first Indie Award from NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors). The Poet Game, his 1994 CD, received another Indie award from NAIRD. His critically acclaimed 1996 release, Further In, was a finalist for the same award. Rolling Stone's four-star review of Further In called Brown "a wickedly sharp observer of the human condition." 1997's Slant 6 Mind (Red House Records) earned Brown his second Grammy nomination. His latest CD, One Night (Red House), is a re-release of a 1983 live performance originally on Minneapolis' Coffeehouse Extemporé Records.

Mages are a five-piece acoustic music ensemble from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group has a collection of two recordings to date, a self-titled album, and their EP "Magestic." Last year the band had the opportunity to perform on Twin Cities Public Television's "Minnesota Original." Mages also kept busy with several live, local shows, including the 9th annual Pizza Luce Block Party. Due to a national record campaign, Mages had the pleasure of being one of the top played bands on a slew of college radio stations across the country. To meet the demand, the group hit the road late last summer for a domestic tour. With the new year in full swing, Mages have already returned to the studio to finish their forthcoming full-length album. In June of 2011, two Winona musicians, one living in Des Moines, IA, the other in Portland, OR, did not let distance stop their musical collaboration. Thanks to the wonders of the internet, the two noble souls could send song ideas, lyrics, and various audiophonic collections via the tubes and develop said collections into fully recorded, reverby folk/pop tunes. Armed with old versions of Garageband and sub-par audio equipment, "The Smallest News" has been whirlwind affair of musical joy. Throughout the film, the audience is taken on a tour through an abandoned building, experiencing the physical and emotional process of three young people set out to explore. Guided by a spirit, the explorers are encouraged to look beyond the rubble into the soul of a space once unarguably beautiful, but now neglected and forgotten. The story is illustrated through choreographed movement married with film technique built on the foundation of an original score. Through the blending of these mediums, the film challenges the audience by asking: does our environment determine our movement or can we determine our movement from within, and by doing so, shape the environment?
This project is a visionary alliance between Wade Rodgers (Writer/Director) and Heidi Draskoci-Johnson (Choreographer); two artists originally from Winona, MN and alumni of Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts. The director is a recent graduate of Columbia College Chicago with a B.A. in Film and Video and the choreographer is the Artistic Director of Two Lakes Dance Project, a collective seeking non-profit status dance performance troupe based out of Winona.

The Melismatics' new album "MANIA!" was produced by Jon Auer of The Posies and Big Star, along with Ed Ackerson (Motion City Soundtrack, Golden Smog, The Replacements) and was mixed by John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Rooney, Har Mar Superstar, etc). The LP was mastered at Sterling Sound in NYC by Chris Athens (Coldplay, Beastie Boys, NERD, etc) and features collaborations with Dan Wilson (Adele, Semisonic) and Jon Auer who also lends vocals to several tracks.
The Melismatics formed at the turn of the century in the fertile ground of the Minneapolis indie-rock scene. Their debut album "Postmodern Rock" quickly caught the attention of college radio stations around the country and garnered favorable reviews from critics around the world. Shortly thereafter, Minneapolis indie-rock king pin Ed Ackerson (Motion City Sountrack, The Replacements, The Jayhawks) signed the band to Susstones Records and produced their next two albums "New Infection" and "Turn It On". The Melismatics toured the country numerous times over and continued to win loyal fans with their high-energy and unpredictable live shows. Their music has been featured on MTV's "The Hills," "The City"and "Laguna Beach," NBC's "Windfall"; Animal Planet's "Jockeys" and they've played such notable events as Lollapalooza, Summerfest, and CMJ. The Melismatics released "The Acid Test" on CC Entertainment/E1 Music (2008). Renowned producer John Fields caught the band performing at 2007 SXSW in Austin, Texas and signed on to produce the album. The music video for "Digging Deep" charted at #2 on MTVU and received widespread airplay.

Brody is the official event comedian for the SyFy Channel’s TV show “Ghost Hunters,” which has given him the opportunity to perform in such unconventional venues as the Stanley Hotel (basis for Stephen King’s The Shining), Mt. Washington Resort and Alcatraz. These unique shows highlight Brody’s ability to make the weird relatable, a skill he brings to audiences from clubs to bars to colleges across the country.
He has worked with Dave Attell, Emo Philips, Doug Stanhope, Doug Benson, and legendary street performer/madman/savant Wesley Willis, and has appeared on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom Show, and on ten episodes of the weekly Minneapolis TV series The Buzz.

Late 2007: Zak Kaszynski and Lars Roeder move in together on the 3rd floor of Wentz Hall at UWL, Patrick Carthey and Casey Hautala move in together just down the hall, and Bob Tolson moves in on the 1st floor. They all run into each other and realize they all play instruments. Bob's roommate Tanner Classon is drafted as the guitarist and the band never rehearses. Also of note, Bob asks Sam Shilts to be the drummer the same day Zak asks Lars to be the drummer, and shit gets awkward.
2008: We all quit marching band 'cause it sucked and realize that not playing really really loud music kinda sucks too. Lars drops out of Jazz II and guitarist Neil Ferris transfers to UWL and into the jazz program where Bob and Zak meet him. He becomes the full-time guitarist. The band plays their first show in April in the Wentz Hall basement where Casey has trouble standing up with his sousaphone because the fucking ceiling is too low. Shows would continue through early 2nd semester of that year basically making it by on hits like Sock Monkey Fossils and I'm So Cool for every set, which are recorded around this time and take a year to mix.
Later that semester Bob shows up late to rehearsal in a shitty mood and shortly thereafter Neil quits (and now has his own jazz quartet, go check them out!). Neil agrees to play the rest of the scheduled shows...very important venues like the field in front of the CFA and a nearly empty park hut in Myrick.
The most noteable moment from this year would be the final song of the Baird/Trow Bash where the band attempts to cover Sorta' Like Being Pumped by Bomb the Music Industry only to discover that Bob's guitar had gone far out of tune, no one remembered the horn parts, the form was hazy, and Bob lost his voice.
2009: Having gone the entire summer without a guitarist the band has no idea what the future holds...especially since Bob starts a summer band (Vs. the Vending Machine) in a completely different town playing the exact same music, which still baffles everyone involved to this day. Finally the school year rolls around and we come to find that not only have we contacted two legitimate candidates for guitarist, but Zak has spent his entire summer learning guitar just to play our songs. When Joe Etten backs out in the name of schoolwork, Phil Branigan agrees to join.
The band releases its first recordings (1, 2, 3...EP!) for free download on bandcamp.com after a dispute between Bob and Zak over CD packaging (cardboard sleeves vs. jewel cases).
2010: 1, 2, 3...Walrus! finally makes their first dollar. T-Shirts are made, sweatshop style, after Lars purchases a screen printing kit. After making a couple bucks the band realizes they can finally leave La Crosse to play a couple shows and uses the money on gas to get to gigs in Winona MN, Burnsville MN, Appleton WI, and Milwaukee WI that summer. The band nearly changes direction when Lars is the high bidder on a synthesizer on Ebay, but decide to start a failing side project to justify some shady-ass shows in their own basement instead. When the second show is busted by the cops, all of 123 Walrus! rages, and thus rooses.

Kensington Stone originated near the end of a bitter cold Minnesota winter in early 2010 and have been warming up the Midwest music scene ever since. Drawing The Black Keys and Red Hot Chili Peppers-like comparisons in sound, the group emphasizes exploring the unknown instrumentally and grooving hard behind Caron and Boeke's adroit lyrical passages. With a quality demo produced thanks to the handiwork of James Phillips, Kensington Stone has recently relocated to Minneapolis, MN in an effort to reach more people with their music. In November of 2011, Chuck Boeke relocated to Minneapolis to join the group on mandolin, enhancing the sonic dimensions further. An accomplished songwriter himself, the band has been hard at work learning his tunes and teaching him theirs. Look for them at a venue near you soon!
